Only 10 kilometers from Puerto Maldonado airport lies the Lake Sandoval is considered one the most beautiful lakes in the Amazon, this lake is in the protected area of the Tambopata Reserve, it is home for various unique species like the giant otters, this pristine Elbow Lake is filled with an incredible amount of biodiversity. The region holds 362 species, butterflies (1,200 species), and unique type of birds (500 species). The Sandoval lake Lodge overlooks sparkling, palm-rimmed Sandoval Lake, no other lodge in the Tambopata- Madidi reserve is on the banks of the protected area. The lodge counts with fully screened accommodation, hot water electricity, fans, great meals, airport transfers, expert naturalist guides. The lodge is the base camp to explore the Amazon forest by day excursions and search for the giant otter, tapirs, turtles, monkeys and macaws, and in the night excursions we can search for caimans, the lodge is built out of ecologically protective standards.

• Day 01: Puerto Maldonado Airport to Sandoval Lake Lodge

• Day 04: Sandoval Lake to Puerto Maldonado airport

Day 1 – Transfer from Puerto Maldonado to Sandoval lake Lodge by boat & Tours

At arrival to Puerto Maldonado airport, by bus we reach the Madre de Dios river, from the main port we take a 25 minutes of motorized canoe to the riverside trailhead to Sandoval Lodge, from here the trail takes you in a 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) walk through the secondary forest (a rickshaw can be requested) to a small canal from where we board canoes and paddle through flooded forest of tall Mauritia palms, after a short ride you are transferred to a Catamaran that slowly will reach the exotic Sandoval Lake Lodge. Accommodation and lunch at the comfortable installations, after lunch we recommend you to rest and relax to avoid the early afternoon heat before taking the afternoon activities.

West Edge Lake Tour: Before boarding the catamaran we will learn about the philosophy of the lodge founders, then set off to explore the entire west end of the lake amongst the flooded palm forest we drift to the sounds of hundreds of red-bellied macaws as they return to their nests, this particular flock mean to be the biggest in the world. Return to the lodge for dinner at its spacious dining hall.

Black Caiman night tour: After dinner, board the canoe to explore the lake by night and search for the extremely rare black caimans, their iridescent red eyes flicking in the dark will discover their position. As well the bright Milky Way could be observed.

Overnight at The Sandoval lake Lodge

Day 2 – Tours: Giant otter, Brazil nut tree, East edge side & Monkey tour.

Giant Otter tour: pre dawn wake up and observe the sunrise over the lake searching for a giant otter family that frequents this part of the lake, and are very active at this time of day, as the hoatzin a prehistoric type of bird, the area offers abundant wild life including over 40 species of birds, a true paradise for bird watchers and photographers (mostly fish eating species). Return to the lodge for breakfast.

Brazil nut harvesting tour: at mid morning we see some towering wild Brazil nut trees, these are keep by 5 families who will show you how they harvest and commercialize them. Return to the lodge for lunch and rest.

East Edge lake side & monkey tour: In the afternoon we board the catamaran and explore the eastern side of the lake and look for some of the five species of monkeys that inhabit the surroundings, can be seeing: Brown capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkey. Return to the lodge for a natural history video presentation and dinner.

Black caiman night tour or night hike: after dinner again you will have the chance to look for the black caimans at the lake or just have a night walk through the forest.

Day 3 – Return to Puerto Maldonado ( 3 DAY & 2 NIGHT PROGRAM )

West lake side tour and return to Puerto Maldonado ( for 3d/2n Program) : After down breakfast we take a final short paddle around the west end of the lake and try to spot the resident giant otters for the last time, seeing a spectacular sun rise over the lake we return to Puerto Maldonado Airport to flight to you next destination.

If you are continuing on the 4 day/ 3 night program:

West Edge lake Tour: having a quick snack we tour by catamaran seeing the many bird’s species and searching for the rare giant otters.

Jungle trail hike: After breakfast an expert naturalist guide will lead you by a forest trail and walk by a Mauritia palm forest, and observe the impressive morning congregations of parrots, parakeets, large and small macaws and some of the other nesters of the palms like; Yellow headed parrot, mealy parrot, scarlet macaw, cobalt winged parakeet and many other bird species. Returning we cross the lake to explore a primary forest trail and learn about the diversity of flora and fauna. Return to the lodge for lunch. And take a free afternoon.

East edge lake tour: In the late afternoon we board the catamaran for a sunset exploration later return to the lodge for dinner.

Overnight at The Sandoval lake Lodge

Day 4 – Return to Puerto Maldonado ( 4 DAY & 3 NIGHT PROGRAM )

West Lake Edge tour and return to Puerto Maldonado: After down breakfast we take a final short paddle around the west end of the lake and try to spot the resident giant otters for the last time, seeing a spectacular sun rise over the lake we return to Puerto Maldonado Airport to flight to you next destination.
